more on amelias room

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

we took the doors off of amelias closet and we made theater drapes for the inside. looking at the picture this morning, i’ve decided it needs a little something. i am thinking a turquoise trim that’s funky and large. something that matches the color of the bed (not as shown) and brings it all together. instead of the drapes, i think i’ll add the trim to the valences (thanks for the idea mom)

yesterday we decided to incorporate this gorgeous throw which will be folded at the end of the bed & now i want in add in these pillows. remember it’s not the first hundred dollars you spend that counts, it’s the last five dollars that makes a room (paraphrasing here)

to love savannah

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

is to love: driving in november with the top down all the way from athens, the downtown design district overflowing with well kept shops- the avia hotel perfectly modern & perfectly set in the perfect location- the paris market, by far my favorite shop & an inspirational stop- the savannah college of art & design (and their hip shop) - the spanish moss trees & gorgeous squares that make you want to sit down & write your first novel - vinnie van go-gos pizza & beer on tap- a surprising mix of old colonial philadelphia & southern charm- no. four eleven, the happiest shop on the block- la paperie, beautiful pieces of paper- in 24 hours, we did not have enough time to really get into the heart of savannah. this was our preview trip. for next time, i’ll stay a week. one thing i do know, after spending one night & one day is…

savannah is my new favorite place

(note one place to avoid is Elizabeths on 37th street. it’s such a drag. over rated and over priced and no fun what so ever.)

summers end

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

this past weekend we said good bye to summer at my parents beach house where my three mermaids spent endless hours in the sun & surf. this past weekend we swam with dolphins, slept late, ate loads, biked as a family, and decided to let summer slip away. schools back in session, we’ve traded in the flip flops for mary janes, & put away our white shorts. it’s fall. i am now ready for it. football season, chili, cashmere, boots, roaring fires outside on our deck. my now tan toes will fade. my beach babies will turn pale & rosy cheeked. it’s going to be a beautiful season. i want to host a few parties, tailgate a little, and rake leaves. (don’t ask me why, i just do). what a wonderful end to summer though. what a wonderful labor day weekend. thank you mom & ww, as always

this goes out to ww on fathers day

-he didn’t have to be-
lyrics by brad paisley

dedicated to him

“when a single mom goes out on a date with somebody new. it always winds up feeling more like a job interview. my momma used to wonder if she’d ever meet someone who wouldn’t find out about me and then turn around and run. i met the man I call my dad when I was five years old. he took my mom out to a movie and for once I got to go. a few months later I remember lying there in bed. I overheard him pop the question and prayed that she’d say yes. And then all of a sudden oh, it seemed so strange to me
how we went from something’s missing to a family lookin’ back all I can say about all the things he did for me is I hope I’m at least half the dad that he didn’t have to be.met the girl that’s now my wife about three years ago. We had the perfect marriage but we wanted somethin’ more. Now here I stand surrounded by our family and friends. Crowded ’round the nursery window as they bring the baby in. And now all of a sudden It seemed so strange to me. How we’ve gone from something’s missing
To a family Lookin’ through the glass I think about the man. That’s standin’ next to me. And I hope I’m at least half the dad. That he didn’t have to be

Lookin’ back all I can say
About all the things he did for me
Is I hope I’m at least half the dad
That he didn’t have to be

Because he didn’t have to be
You know he didn’t have to be

reagan & emma arden outside of st. stephen’s cathedral in vienna

ms reagan (our 7 year old) has been spending the last 10 days abroad. first she flew to vienna with our athens friends, bo & birgit & their three little girls. then they all drove to birgits hometown of krems- just 30 minutes from vienna. she spent her days in krems with the rutledge family eating grandmothers cooking (birgit- can you send home some schnitzel?) & having ice cream in the town square & going on boat rides on the river danube. she’s not really roughing it. she picked up a few german words i’m told & visited a local school. yesterday she was transported to her god mothers house in vienna. becca & rodney are from arkansas but reside in vienna… on the graben… right downtown… in a gorgeous flat. i’m not sure what their plans are but knowing becca it will be perfectly planned & executed. i wish i was there. reagan and emma arden (beccas daugther), a beautiful red head only 4 months younger than reagan, have been friends since birth. on thursday, they are all off to budapest (where reagan was born) via train to visit my best friend, erica, who has 3 charming girls also all about reagans age. so in total there will be 5 girls all staying with erica. its going to be a girl party & i can’t think of a better host. i think the plans include swimming, lunching, and laughing a lot. friday stephen flies into budapest and sunday they fly back via rome to atlanta together. it’s a whirlwind of girl fun & i know she is having a ball

everyone keeps calling to ask if i miss her? i do. but i know that she’s experiencing life. having one hell of a good time & with my favorite people in the world. yeah. i miss her. i can’t wait to see her. but most of all, i am happy for her. she is beginning on her journey to total independence, she’s being bitten by the travel bug, & she’s being loved by people who we love dearly. what could be better in this world than that?

christmas traditions begin in athens

Saturday, December 20th, 2008

we have our tree up & we’ll decorate it together on monday when stephen arrives from moscow. i like getting a tree late, decorating it late, & keeping it up late. it eases me into christmas & its becoming our new tradition. its also becoming a tradition in our family for us to host christmas eve. my parents will come around two & we’ll have champagne & apps around three. stephen, reagan, & i will attend mass at st. joes at four with our friends & my parents will watch the little girls. i’m doing this beautiful crudité from eddie ross & this onion relish with crackers. for dinner, s is making simple spaghetti bolognese, garlic bread, & my mom will make her out-of-this-world ceasar salad. we’ll have cake for dessert from cecilas bakery. we’re drinking my clients favorite zinfendal that she now has me addicted to & we’ll go to bed early for santas arrival. christmas morning, i plan on serving a breakfast casserole & strong coffee. christmas day we’ll journey to my parents house around five to have a beautiful, formal meal.

every night in december, we have been jammin’ out to christmas music while we dine. i love the traditional frank sinatra, bing crosby, and ella fitzgerald but my new favorite is faith hills - joy to the world- christmas cd. it’s fantastic: retro inspired, a bit like the big band sound with a sweet angel singing. i pretend i can sing like her at night in front of the girls while they eat their dinner. they give me strange looks …

it’s still wild to me that these are my kids, this is our christmas that they will remember forever, and that its up to *us* to make it as special as possible. it’s crazy that all their memories will be made here & now. i’m trying not to think of making it perfect, but rather real. last night we watched a movie together & then i read them the night before christmas. grace wanted to know if the reindeer would get stuck in the snow. i assured her that they had enough magic to get unstuck…

this year more than ever, i’m driving home the message that it doesn’t matter who gets what, christmas is about love, family, good friends, and sharing the joy of being together

in a house full of girls, my lipsticks are constantly disappearing. it’s miraculous really. no one seems to know where they all go. so i ventured to macys yesterday to pick up a little gloss for myself & fell in love with the estee lauder holiday blockbuster package. with any fragrence purcahse you can buy $300 worth of make up for $49.50 all in a beautiful black make up case. i purchased a perfummed body lotion (i don’t like sprays) for $30 and then the holiday package. i got 3 lipsticks, 1 mascarea, 1 eye liner, 2 lip glosses, 1 case full of beautiful shadows, 1 case full of neutral blushes, 4 new perfect brushes, 1 bottle of eye make up remover & i am in heaven. really there’s nothing like new make up. it says its sold out on line but its not in stores

nine

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

must be our lucky number: we married in the 9th month in 1999, 9 million people told us i was too young, another 9 million told us you were too old for me, we’ve moved 9 times together, 9 is the number of kids i’d like to have with you, 9 is the number of sofas we’ve owned (really), and 9 is the maximum number of cocktails we can jointly have & still stand up vertically at the end of the night (i know, we’ve tried), & 9 is the minimum number of times you make me laugh in a 24 hour period

yes, this is our lucky year, mr. s

hoagies how to a la stephen

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

we weren’t big sandwich people growing up. i remember my moms chicken salad sandwiches which were and still are out of this world but i really did not get into the art of sandwich making until s. on our first trip together to his hometown, philadelphia, we munched on his favorite hoagies made by his dad. at first, i was unimpressed. i really did not understand the big deal. and then, a few days into our trip, i found myself craving one. and now, i’m a full blown hoagie lover. it’s my first request meal when s arrives home and he makes a damn good one. today he shares his recipe with you. enjoy one soon on us

GUEST BLOGGER - STEPHEN

it all starts with the roll. As all Philadelphians know, classic Italian Philly hoagies must be eaten on the orginal italian Armoroso bread roll. If you can’t get your hands on them due to your distance from the Armoroso bread truck routes, you must find the closest facsimile. Avoid french bread as the outside is too hard and the inside does’nt quite absorb olive oil properly. Look for long, spongey bread that will be a bit chewy. Italian, Cuban, or Middle Eastern bread may do the trick.

Cut the rolls down the middle, splay open, and pull the thickest parts of the dough out to create space for the guts of the sandwich. Spread oilive oil all over the bread coming close to almost drenching it. Now take about 2 tablespoons of dried oregano and crunch/pinch in your palms to release the flavor - then drizzle all over the open faced rolls

hoagie.jpg

Lay sharp provolone cheese down the length of the bread and then cover with a layer of very thinly sliced Italian Ham. Repeat with thinly sliced Italian Salami and finish with Italian Spicy Capicola Ham.

Now cover with thinly sliced ripe tomatoes and hit it with salt and pepper. On top, spread equal amounts chopped-up lettuce and onions. Sprinkle with more oregano and a final shot or two of olive oil

A twist on this is the “Oven Grinder.” Make this by simply wrapping the finished hoagie in aluminum foil and bake in an oven at circa 375 degrees for 20 minutes. hot/spicy chopped cherry pepper spread is a great addition

being that photography is my daily grind, you might think i’d get tired of looking at photos and discerning good from banal in my spare time. but the affliction is chronic and i happily devour all things still-image. my friend and former colleague Jeff Hutchen’s work has just the kind of authentic style to keep even a jaded pro like me interested. thank goodness he has a blog where he posts his stylish and very creative work

sara [without an h] is a native washingtonian and has called DC her grown-up home for the last 5 + years having returned from paris, maine & kentucky. she studied fine art/photography, minored in french & art history. she met her life’s love in college & now shares a renovated 1880’s carriage house on a quiet alley in downtown dc. with art, photography, fashion and design as her creative companions she works as a photographer representative with national geographic assignment. sara loves travel, riding her bike around town, original music, fresh food, & well fitting clothes. i first met sara through s briefly in budapest & got to know her when we moved to dc. I was lucky to partake in a few hip parties in her jaw dropping converted carriage house. i have adored her since. she beautifully blogs on pretty pieces this week on a well tailored life. merci sara, and enjoy friends-

if grandma’s white victorian wicker porch set is not your idea of hip patio furniture, where can you turn to find unique and fun pieces? i’m working on tracking down some cool outdoor furniture for our roof deck project that been going on now for three years. the key for me is to not spend an arm and a leg and eBay has turned up some decent “sets” that are resin wicker. i used the broad search term “wicker set”, then narrow the search results to “patio & grilling”. paola lenti’s furniture is my inspiration and Il Gusto has some good looking pieces too. a wonderful design and furniture shop in georgetown called Contmeporaria turned me onto paola lenti

exfoliate exhilaration

ericas beauty resolution #5: slough it off, sister!

i’ve been a loyal fan of clinique’s exfoliating scrub for years (not to be confused with their 7-day scrub, of which, i am not a fan). however, like any love affair based on beauty, i am growing bored with that “medical green”- colored tube and crave something new in the medicine cabinet. so i’m making a change. i know that for some of you, this sounds silly to be excited about but if you know the power of exfoliation, then you surely understand the feeling of exhilaration after those magic beads do their work and you’re left with skin that looks close up ready.

here’s what I’m buying:

93337_fpxtif.jpeg

on a side note, i have a thing for oranges lately. clementine season always does that to me. does it you? so the exfoliator 2-3 times a week, followed by your favorite cream (creme de la mer, of course)- preferably at night so your skin can enjoy all the benefits while it’s at rest.

happy scrubbing!

ericas beauty resolution #4: sweet clean dreams

i resolve to remove my makeup EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. that’s right. even on the nights i’m so exhausted that brushing my teeth is a painful chore. two or more glasses of wine is no excuse for waking up with mascara under
your eyes. heroin chic is so 90’s.

when i have the time and inclination: i’ll use a gentle foaming face wash followed by a soothing toner, but on most nights i can’t see that happening. instead, I’ll just reach for this:

pro tip: soak two cotton pads and work double time. you may even have time for a goodnight kiss before you hit the pillow…

ericas beauty resolution #3: skin care

monthly facials. in an ideal world that’s just grand. in my world, i’m lucky to squeeze in biannual appointments where the facialist scolds me for not properly caring for my skin at home. in fact, i should set her up with my dentist, so they could get together and have a good laugh about my flossing and exfoliating habits.

let’s say i manage to upgrade to quarterly facials this year. four hours of skin care alone can’t possibly scare the crow’s feet off these 36 year-old eyes, so i’m going to have to take matters into my own hands. i’m breaking out the heavy artillery and buying this:

lm_lm1112_246.jpg

“an online exclusive, this collection brings together three signature skincare treatments – Crème de la Mer (1 oz.), The Lifting Face Serum (1 oz.) and Crème de la Mer’s latest––The Eye Concentrate (0.5 oz.). presented in an elegant gift box, it’s a beautiful way to experience the best La Mer has to offer”

i’ve been a fan of La Mer products ever since I was a young pup working at neiman marcus in boston and they gave me my first free jar when they launched the “product line” with one cream. they said it was all you needed…nothing else. now they have a full range of products- which made me very skeptical at first, feeling like they were going back on their promise of keeping my life simple….well, the truth is, i’m an addict at heart and can’t stay angry for too long.

erica’s beauty resolution #2: hair

many a beauty magazine has been known to ask the question: if you were stranded on a desert island, what one beauty product could you not live without? obvious answers are blush, foundation, mascara or bronzer. the “SMARTY PANTS” always answer lipstick because they’d use it on eyes, cheeks, and lips. all solid responses. however…all the blush, bronzer, foundation and mascara in the world won’t do you a bit of good if your hair looks like hell. gweneth paltrow was once quoted in an interview saying that if her hair looked good, everything else fell into place. well, halleluja gwennie! i know that I’ve been guilty of one too many ponytail days in 2007 and that’ll have to change in 2008. here’s how i’m doing it:

96.jpg

contrôle / ironless straghtening balm
salon blow-out sans stylist. this miraculous, non-chemical balm helps hair go straight while you dry. sleek, chic hair that resists frizz and fly-aways.

can it be TRUE? can i really get gorgeous jennifer “rachael” aniston, silky smooth locks with the help of this product alone? i’m not sure, but it’s going right onto my credit card and my hair ASAP.

and for the days that I want that sexy bed-head look that all the movie stars seem to have so effortlessly after just 2 or 3 hours in the hair and makeup trailer, i’ve got to have this:

99-1.jpg

finally, i think it’s time to retire my old hairdryer and start anew. the only brand to have is the solano.
any solano will do… they are amazing. and i don’t care how many millions of watts yours has, if it’s not a solano, it’s not worth your time. and you surely shouldn’t waste your money on the coiff products if you’re going to use some second-rate hair dryer. so try this out today:

232xblack.jpg

solano also makes a killer straightening iron that i highly recommend. find it here & buy it now. you’ll thank me later.

introducing erica: a 36 year-old make up junkie with no hope of recovery. unable to satisfy her endless desire to wander the floors of the cosmetic department at saks, she decided to join the ranks & enter in the business. she spent nearly a decade working for trish mcevoy, chanel, laura mercier, stila and several other top names. she currently lives in budapest with her hungarian husband and three future junkies. erica is my best friend in the world, strikingly beautiful and really funny (possibly the funniest person i know). she’s also an expert in make up & skin care. she’ll be here all week blogging on beauty resolutions. trust me, you should invest in each & every product she mentions. she is one mama who knows her stuff.

erica’s beauty resolution #1

feeling less and less like a diva, i’ve declared 2008 to be a “thin year”, as well as a gorgeous one. that said, i’m focusing all my resolutions on how to make it happen. and you, lucky reader, will surely benefit from my manic search for beauty in 2008. there is, however, one small disclaimer: merely purchasing these items is no guarantee that you will experience drastic change. YOU MUST USE THE PRODUCTS, as directed, for as long as it takes for said product to run out! i, myself, am guilty of harboring hundreds of dollars of health and beauty aids in every drawer and cabinet of my bathroom, some of which were never opened. wrinkles can’t be prevented if the cream only hits your face the night of a big party or when you see yourself in fluorescent lighting. use what you buy, or else face a life of ageing not-so-gracefully - not to mention the guilt that accompanies wasting lots of cash.

first on my list: hands and nails

yhst-57959382336873_1981_9857443.gif

if eyes are the windows to the soul, then hands are the doorway to age. botox and restylane all you want, but nothing will give you away faster than those hands. i was always proud of mine, and recently i looked toward the keyboard and saw my mom’s hands staring back at me. HELP!

“developed by the nobel institute honored, Dr. Paul Herzog, KARIN HERZOG
medical-grade quality skin care from switzerland has distinguished itself
as a worldwide leader in offering unique, patented products with the
minimum of ingredients necessary to allow skin to function and breathe
normally, keeping skin looking young, radiant, and best of all, healthy.
The products are so pure, and the quality standards so rigorous, that many
of the Karin Herzog products require no preservatives.”

here’s the one i’m trying: karin herzog hand cream

yhst-57959382336873_1981_6667844.gif

“contains 2% oxygen and multiple vitamins, lipids and essential fatty acids, to soften, condition and hydrate the skin of your hands. anti-ageing for the hands as well as promoting healthy nails”

yhst-57959382336873_1981_4606015.jpeg

and I’m going to throw in a jar of their nail cream as well. my cuticles are a MESS.
